2005 Feather Reviews:

Wine Advocate: 93 Points

Randy Dunnn
Randy Dunn
Napa Valley vintner, Randy Dunn, has built a reputation over four decades for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignons. After making wines at Caymus from 1975-1985, Randy established Dunn Vineyards on Howell Mountain where he continues to craft distinctive wines of high acclaim. Now partnering with Allen Shoup, Randy brings his artistry and expertise to Washington State to produce small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Columbia Valley's finest vineyards.

Tasting Notes: Concentrated and beautifully balanced, Randy Dunn's 2006 Feather might best be described as "an iron fist in a velvet glove." This wine offers fresh, fragrant, fruity aromas; spicy, dark cherry on the palate and a silky mouth feel and lengthy finish.

Vintage: The Columbia Valley's growing seasons are remarkably consistent and the 2006 vintage was no exception. While there were some early worries that high heat accumulation in July and August would cause grapes to ripen too quickly, fall temperatures cooled just enough to slow ripening and allow flavors to develop fully. The resulting wines are wonderfully hedonistic and bursting with pure fruit aromas and flavors.

Winemaking: Randy is a frequent visitor to the Columbia Valley, checking his favorite vineyards for balance throughout the growing season and returning during harvest to inspect the grapes before making the call to pick. Like previous vintages of Feather, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is hand-harvested, fermented in small lots and aged 22 months in new Vicard French oak barrels, Randy's cooper of choice at Dunn Vineyards as well.

Vineyards: The 2006 Feather includes grapes from acclaimed Horse Heaven Hills vineyards (32%), such as Wallula, contributing dark fruit character and earthiness to the wine. Stillwater Creek on the Royal Slope of the Frenchman Hills (23%) brings fresh fruit aromas and balance. Grapes from the Wahluke Slope (19%) add beautiful structure and ripe tannins. With the primary blend complete, Randy relies on a wide assortment of diverse vineyards to add layers and complexity to the final blend.
